Hiking from Fira to Oia: Santorini’s Most Breathtaking Trail
When people think of Santorini, they often picture whitewashed buildings, sunsets in Oia, and infinity pools clinging to cliffs. But beyond the postcard views lies something even more rewarding: hiking across the caldera, with the Aegean Sea as your constant companion.
Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or just someone who loves a scenic stroll, hiking in Santorini is one of the best ways to experience the island’s soul. You don’t just see the island — you feel it, hear it, walk with it. So pack your walking shoes and follow the path.
We took the iconic Fira to Oia hike. This is Santorini’s most famous trail, and for good reason. Starting in Fira, you’ll wind your way through the charming villages of Firostefani, Imerovigli, and finally reach Oia — the sunset capital of the island.
Along the way, you’ll pass:
- Clifftop chapels and blue domes
- Sweeping views of the volcanic caldera
- Lava-rock paths and wild thyme bushes
- Instagrammable spots at literally every turn

The moderate trail stretches about 6.2 miles (~10 km) and took us around 3 hours to complete — though depending on your pace (and how often you stop for photos or a snack), it can take anywhere from 2.5 to 4 hours.
I highly suggest you start early to avoid the midday heat, the crowd and wear proper shoes — some sections are rocky, uneven, and have lots of steps.
What to Bring
- Water (there are few places to refill)
- Hat, sunscreen, sunglasses
- Good walking shoes (not flip-flops!)
- Your camera or your phone with power bank — trust us on this one
This hike is pretty special, the kind that make you stop and stare in silence — for a number of times. You get to see donkeys, pass by quiet churches, stop at bakeries, and peek into lovely backyards.
Arriving in Oia after the hike is pure magic. Grab a cold drink, dip into a taverna for brunch, or just watch the world go by. You earned it.
Too tired to walk back? No worries — you can catch a bus, taxi, or uber back to Fira.
